Famous artists of the past and contemporary artists have used portraiture and self portraiture to address issues related to their everyday life, psychology, social and cultural identity, even politics. This class will raise discussion on how and why we define ourselves through self- portraits, and the way in which artists present themselves in their work. This class will examine the ways artists address, both technically and conceptually, personal, cultural, and political issues using self-portraits and then put techniques and styles on to canvas. This class will build on the technical handling of materials, however its main purpose is to expose young artists to a variety of contemporary artists, interpretive styles, and ultimately what it means to be an artist.

What to bring: Clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, 2 or 3 copies of a picture of yourself (can be different or the same), a snack, and a water bottle (there are no drinking fountains in the building).
