Painting for Grades 5-9

Painting from Life for Beginners

with Noaa Spiekermann

2/3:  Two NEW workshops!

for Grades 5 – 9
(this class is designed for ages 10/11 – 14/15 but older students are welcome to participate)

Workshop 1 – Focus on the Object:  Friday, Feb. 6th, 6:30 – 8:30pm

This workshop will focus on seeing and then conveying objects in three-dimensions.  Students will work from an object chosen in the studio or brought from home.  Before creating a portrait-like painting of the object, we will warm up with color mixing exercises and by creating sketches of the object from different angles.

Workshop 2 – Classic Still Life:  Friday, Feb. 13th, 6:30 – 8:30pm

After warming up with some quick sketches and practice exercises, we will spend the class working from a simple still life in the studio. We will focus on painting the objects in relation to one another to create a realistic sense of space and work on mixing colors to match what we see.

NOTE – This series of workshops can be taken individually or together and is designed to make the basics of painting accessible and fun to those just getting started!  The workshops are open to new students as well as to those who took any or all of the previous workshops.  We will be working from life with the goal of learning to create paintings that evoke the world around us with a drawing-based technique using still-lifes and possibly outdoor and interior views.  The goal is to build confidence in the basic skills of realistic painting so that students can continue to create art on their own long after class has ended.

MEDIUM – Acrylic paint, charcoal, pencil

$20 tuition + $10 materials fee, per student per class

(materials will be provided by the instructor)
Please bring a snack, water bottle, and a smock or old t-shirt to each class!

Noaa Spiekermann grew up in Albemarle County and graduated from the University of Virginia in 2012 with a B.A. in Studio Art and Environmental Science.  I paint what I find beautiful around me and hope to capture some of that beauty, working mostly in oils “en plein air.”  I am drawn to the shapes, colors, and shadows created by sunlight in outdoor settings.  I try to focus on painting the overall feeling of a place rather than attempting to recreate every detail, and I strive to find a balance between making my paintings recognizable as the scenes that inspire them while allowing for a freedom of brushstroke and color.  I have had a chance to hang paintings at Martha Jefferson Hospital and King Family Vineyards, and have participated in the Earlysville Winter Arts and Crafts Show.  www.facebook.com/NoaaSpiekermannArt
