Painting from Life for Beginners

Two special workshop dates
with Noaa Spiekermann
For Grades 5 – 9

Workshop 1:  Painting from Shapes  – December 5, 5:30  – 7:30pm

This class will focus on mapping out a painting.  We will discuss composition and use drawing tools to sketch out the basic shapes and shadows of a scene.  Then, with just one or two colors, we will use shapes, shadows, and lights and darks to re-create life on the canvas.

Workshop 2:  Painting from Colors  – December 13, 10:30am– 1:30pm

This class will play with colors.  We will start with a limited pallet and practice mixing our own colors by making quick color wheels.  Then we will put these skills to use in order to create paintings using color as our primary inspiration without being too caught up in the details of every shape.

This series of workshops can be taken individually or together and is designed to make the basics of painting accessible and fun to those just getting started!  We will be working from life with the goal of learning to create paintings that evoke the world around us with a drawing-based technique using still-lifes and possibly outdoor and interior views.  The goal is to build confidence in the basic skills of realistic painting so that students can continue to create art on their own long after class has ended.

Noaa Spiekermann grew up in Albemarle County and graduated from the University of Virginia in 2012 with a B.A. in Studio Art and Environmental Science.  I paint what I find beautiful around me and hope to capture some of that beauty, working mostly in oils “en plein air.”  I am drawn to the shapes, colors, and shadows created by sunlight in outdoor settings.  I try to focus on painting the overall feeling of a place rather than attempting to recreate every detail, and I strive to find a balance between making my paintings recognizable as the scenes that inspire them while allowing for a freedom of brushstroke and color.  I have had a chance to hang paintings at Martha Jefferson Hospital and King Family Vineyards, and have participated in the Earlysville Winter Arts and Crafts Show.  www.facebook.com/NoaaSpiekermannArt
